Jeff Mills’ upcoming album, The Eyewitness, is set to be released next month. You can now listen to the new single, Those Who Worked Against Us (Vendetta Mix), below.
The Detroit techno pioneer’s nine-track LP explores themes of trauma and shock, with Mills’ own Axis Records describing it as “an album designed to offer an antidote to protect our mental health.” The opening track, In A Traumatized World, introduces the narrative, which the label explains as “the story of what drove humanity past the point of no return.” The album will be released on July 7th.
In a press statement, Mills elaborated on the album’s themes, saying: “Trauma and its shock — the lingering impact of harsh realities — can shape the way we think, envision, and navigate the world around us. A new psychological space forms. Boundaries are fortified, relationships recede, and a damaged belief system floats without direction. We’re left vulnerable, searching for causes that feel worthwhile. The truth has become a satirical monologue, expressions without depth. We all know someone who has faced this or will.”
This marks Mills’ second album release of 2024, following The Trip – Enter The Black Hole in March, which was accompanied by a limited-edition live audio-visual performance in Tokyo. Notably, the vinyl version of that album was mastered to play in reverse.
In October 2023, Mills was featured in German designer Jil Sander’s Fall/Winter campaign. His band, Tomorrow Comes The Harvest, founded with the late Tony Allen, also made a comeback in 2022 with a new lineup, album, and tour.
Additionally, 2022 saw the 30th anniversary of Mills’ groundbreaking debut LP, Waveform Transmission Vol. 1. You can revisit Ben Cardew’s in-depth feature on this iconic techno album.
